When working with our computer, a good monitor calibration is important. All screens have a backlight that will allow us to determine how bright or dim we want to show the image at all times. Depending on our work and the brightness of our work environment, we must adjust the brightness of the screen. However, there are occasions where we can find problems related to brightness control.
To change the brightness of our monitor we can make use of different elements such as our keyboard, the buttons on the monitor itself or from the Settings section in Windows 10. Regardless of the chosen method, the brightness level remains unchanged until we decide to change it. In case this is not the case, we have a problem with our screen that we must solve.

Causes why the brightness control does not stay fixed
That the brightness of the screen does not remain fixed can be something exasperating, because if the brightness is set too low it can be very uncomfortable to work with documents. While, if the screen is too bright, it will consume more power, it can be annoying in low ambient light conditions, and in case of having a laptop degraded the battery more quickly.
If we have verified that the screen brightness control does not remain fixed and is increased or dimmed automatically, it may be due to both a hardware problem, the monitor itself, or a software problem. In this case the problem is usually caused by incorrect, incompatible, outdated or faulty drivers. It could also be because we have the adaptive screen control enabled in Windows 10 or some problem related to power. Whatever the reason, let’s see how we can fix it.
Fix problems with the brightness control
Next, we are going to see some adjustments that we can make on our Windows 10 computer to try to solve the problems caused by the brightness control.
Turn off adaptive brightness
Adaptive brightness is a feature found in many notebook computers that have sensors capable of detecting ambient light. In case it changes, the sensors are responsible for adjusting the brightness of the screen . This ensures that the screen is not too bright or too dark depending on the light in our environment. This is why the adaptive brightness feature may be to blame for automatically dimming or increasing the brightness of the screen.
For this we will check if we have it active and in that case we will deactivate it. The first thing will be to access the “Control Panel”, typing its name in the search box next to the Start menu. Once inside, click on the “Hardware and sound” section. Then we click on “Power Options”.

On the next screen that will appear, we mark the option “Change plan settings” right next to our current energy plan.

Now click on Change advanced power settings, which will make a mini window appear with different options.

Here, if our computer is compatible, we must access “Screen” and “Enable adaptive brightness”. Next, the states of “With battery” and “With alternating current” we put a value of 0 so that they appear as Never. To save the changes, click on Apply and OK.

Use the Power Troubleshooting feature
When it comes to solving this problem, we can use a tool that incorporates Windows 10 by default, such as “Troubleshooting”. To activate it we must open the “Control Panel”. Next, click on the drop-down menu in the upper right to change the view of the screen to “Small icons”. Once the view is changed, we look for and select the “Troubleshooting” function.

On the next screen we go to the left column and click on “See all”. From the list, we click on the “Power” option and run the troubleshooter. We follow the steps indicated by the wizard and apply all the corrections that it recommends. Once finished, we restart the system.

Update the drivers
The problem with the brightness of the screen may be caused by having outdated or outdated drivers, so it is always essential to keep them updated. In general, the new drivers usually include new functions and are responsible for modifying old ones. In the same way they can solve previous problems. For this we can choose whether to update them manually, downloading the drivers ourselves or automatically, either through Windows or third-party programs. Finally, we can also find a problem with “plug and play” monitors.
Update drivers manually
We launch the Run command through the Windows + R shortcut, and type “dxdiag”. In this way we will access the DiretX diagnostic tool , which provides us with information about our system. Here, we go to the “Display” tab. Now in the “Device” section, we must read the name and manufacturer of our card. Subsequently, we head to the manufacturer’s website and navigate to their download page, find our graphics card, and download the drivers. Once downloaded, we double click on them to install them.

Search for drivers automatically through Windows
For this we must use the Device Manager. We will access it, using the Windows + R shortcut to launch the “Run” application and write devmgmt.msc. Once inside we go to the “Display adapters” section and right click on our card. A contextual menu will open and we select “Update driver”.

Use third-party software to search for drivers
In the event that we find the appropriate drivers manually and Windows is not able to find it automatically, we can use third-party programs to help us with this task.
Driver Genius Professional
This program is capable of recognizing more than 80,000 devices, so it can be of great help to download any driver to our computer. It can detect devices the motherboard, the sound card, the video card , the keyboard, the mouse, the printer , the modem, among others. Its biggest problem is that it is not free, so we must pay 24.77 euros. However, we can download a free trial version from this link .
Driver Talent
With this program we will be able to search for all kinds of necessary drivers to make any hardware of our computer work correctly. This application will be in charge of scanning our computer in search of the drivers that we do not have installed or are outdated to download the new ones. Although it is not a free tool, it does have a free trial version that we can download from here . To use it permanently we must pay $ 19.95.
Plug and play monitor issue
Sometimes we can find problems with PnP monitors (plug and play) , because some system or driver updates can cause our monitor to deactivate, so we must check if it has happened to us.

To do this we press Windows + R and we will access the Run application, we write devmgmt.msc to access the Device Manager. Here we display the Monitors section and right-click on our PnP monitor. In the event that it is deactivated, we must check “Enable device”. Once done, we restart the system.
