With the official release of iOS 17, a treasure trove of hidden features and tips awaits discovery, promising innovative approaches to conventional functions that promise to streamline our daily routines. In this instance, our focus is on notifications—a seemingly minor adjustment introduced by Apple in this latest update that harbors significant utility. In this article, we will delve into this feature, shedding light on its potential applications.
iOS 17 isn’t just about introducing new content; it also prioritizes refining existing parameters to make them more accessible to users. Specifically, in the realm of silent and vibration modes, iOS 17 empowers users to effortlessly toggle between settings. In this post, we will unravel the workings of this newfound capability.

Simplified Vibration Customization
For iPhone users with the mute switch conveniently located on the side, activating Silent mode no longer necessitates incessant volume button adjustments. Often, when we seek to silence calls and notifications, we also wish to suppress vibrations, leading to some confusion. In iOS 17, Apple has simplified this process, granting users greater control over when and how their iPhone vibrates.
To access this functionality, navigate to Settings > Sound and Vibrations. At the top of the screen, you will encounter three sections. Initially, you’ll find the on-screen volume control, followed by the “Adjust with Buttons” option, which facilitates volume management via physical buttons. However, the key addition in iOS 17 is the section just below: “Vibrations.”

iOS 17 vibration settings
Within this new menu category, users can select their preferences for when and how the iPhone vibrates, offering four distinct options:
- Always Vibrate: The iPhone vibrates for notifications or calls regardless of whether it’s in silent or sound mode.
- Vibrate in Silent Mode: When activated, this mode triggers vibrations for calls and notifications while the phone is in Silent mode.
- Don’t Vibrate in Silent Mode: Vibrations occur only when the iPhone is in Sound mode.
- Do Not Vibrate: Regardless of the mode (Sound or Silent), no vibrations will be produced.

Clearing Up the Confusion
Notably, iOS 17 also introduces a change in how vibrations can be customized beyond calls and notifications. Within the same “Sound and Vibrations” section, you’ll now find the “System Vibration” option alongside “Keyboard Response” and “Sound When Locking.”

Activating the “System Vibration” option initiates haptic feedback in various system interactions, providing physical responses as you navigate the interface. It’s important to distinguish this system vibration from the earlier section, as they serve different purposes and can be configured independently.
