What Is ProMotion Display and Which iPads Are Compatible

iPad

One of the most ‘Pro’ features, exclusive precisely to the iPad with this name, is the ProMotion screen. This is a technology that allows lucky users to enjoy a really pleasant user experience. But what is it exactly? What iPad Pro models are ProMotion? We tell you everything in this article so you don’t miss anything.

What is the ProMotion screen?

When in 2017 Apple introduced the iPad Pro, it had a new screen technology, called by the Cupertino company, ProMotion screen. This technology was reserved for those more ‘pro’ users to enjoy an iPad loaded with power and, of course, also loaded with potential. But what makes this technology special? Well, the ProMotion screen has the ability to operate with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz which provides very smooth scrolling, impressive responsiveness and very smooth content movement. If you combine the ProMotion display with one of the flagship iPad accessories, the Apple Pencil, you get a responsiveness with a latency of 20 milliseconds, which translates into a natural and very fluid ability to draw on the iPad.

This new technology that Apple introduced in their devices with the iPad Pro delights those who want the response of the iPad to their interactions with the finger or Apple Pencil to be immediate since that refresh rate of up to 120Hz provides that feeling of immediacy. On the screen, it really is like you pick up a pen and write on a piece of paper. In addition, the user experience in navigation is very attractive since that high refresh rate provides the sensation of maximum speed and fluidity.

We would like to say that the rest of the iPad ranges also have this technology, but unfortunately it is not available in all of them. In fact it is a technical ability that can hardly be reproduced by software. Therefore this limited technology is only found in the most recent ‘Pro’ models, which are as follows:

  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch (2017)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2017)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (2018)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2018)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (2020)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2020)

ProMotion Screen Operation

As we have commented previously, the interesting thing about this screen is the refresh rate that it gives the device, which reaches up to 120Hz and that generates a feeling of fluidity and speed when using the device really spectacular and pleasant, giving the sensation that the iPad “flies”. The refresh rate, also called the refresh rate, refers to the number of times per second that the screen is refreshed, that is, it loads the image. In a normal iPad, as in many other Apple devices, this rate is 60Hz, meaning that every second has 60 sodas. Therefore we observe how the ProMotion screen is capable of refreshing itself twice per second. And this is very appreciable to the human eye, especially if you have also previously tried a device with the previous rate of 60Hz.

However, the fact that the screen of these iPads has a refresh rate of 120Hz does not make the iPad always work at this frequency since, to save battery , Apple has made that refresh rate adaptive. The latter means that the 120Hz is activated depending on the content that is viewed or with which one interacts on the iPad, since it adapts the refresh rate of the screen to match the movement of the content. In this way, battery consumption is not excessive and, above all, a technology that demands more resources is not used when it is not really necessary.
