This year Huawei presents the Huawei Mate 40 Pro accompanied by two news: one good and one bad. The good news is that, as another hope, again we are facing the best smartphone ever manufactured by the brand, at the Hardware level, launching a 5 nm processor in the Android ecosystem. The bad news is that this year it comes to our country alone, without a “standard” Huawei Mate 40 by its side and without the Mate 40 Pro +.
The brand continues to bet on differentiating its range caps based on the location of the camera. While the P family mounts a module in the left corner, the Mate family opts for a circular format that is located in the central part of the rear casing. To this we have to add the decision to abandon the notch that accompanied the Pro models of the Mate family for a couple of years and now the Mate 40 Pro is presented with a screen with a double hole for its front camera.
The mobile will arrive in Spain over the next few days with EMUI 11 , again based on Android 10 AOSP but with many changes in the company’s software.
Official characteristics of the Huawei Mate 40 Pro
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro has a 6.76-inch OLED “Horizon Display” which has a resolution of 2772 x 1344 pixels and therefore achieves a pixel density of 456 dpi. The refresh rate remains at the same 90 Hz present in the P40 Pro. This DCI.-P3 HDR panel sports an 88º curvature in the profiles that enhances the waterfall effect of the smartphone. The power and good performance of the smartphone is the work of its new Kirin 9000 processor, manufactured under a 5 nm process and with an integrated 5G modem. The phone sports a 4,400 mAh battery with fast charging 66W Huawei SuperCharge (60% more powerful compared to Mate 30 Pro) and Wireless Huawei SuperCharge 50W (85% more powerful compared to Mate 30 Pro). To this we add a set of stereo speakers in the upper and lower profile.
Other features include a NanoMemory slot for special Huawei memory cards, compatibility with Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and WiFi 6. The phone has dimensions of 75.5 millimeters wide, 162.9 millimeters long and 9.1 millimeters thick. , as well as a 212 grams.
The new camera of the Huawei Mate 40 Pro
In terms of design, the camera is kept in the same upper centered area of the rear housing, but with a new design called “Space Ring Design” where the three lenses developed in cooperation with Leica are located.
The three sensors that star what the brand calls Ultra vision Cine Camera consist of a 50 megapixel sensor with an f / 1.9 aperture and an optical image stabilizer, a 20 megapixel sensor for wide-angle shots with an f / 1.8 aperture. and a periscope-type telephoto lens with 12 megapixel resolution and f / 3.4 aperture that is capable of working with a 5x optical zoom.
Among other things, the camera system is capable of recording 8K videos and in addition to the individual LED flash, there is also a laser focus sensor that supports the mobile, especially in video recording.
The manufacturer has provided the smartphone with different video tools such as the following:
- XD Fusion HDR Video: Function that works with a new algorithm that improves the performance of backlit images when recording clips
- Steady Shot: Improved stabilization when recording dynamic clips
- Tracking Shot: More “casual” function designed for those who are not used to using pro mode. It allows you to keep track of a person or object and keep it in focus at all times during video recording.
- Story Creator: Tool designed to create your own 15-second stories and upload them to social networks from the camera app, with different movements, approaches or frames. Similar to Samsung’s Single Capture model
At the video level, the mobile supports 4K super slow motion recording at 720p and 3840 fps.
In the pill-shaped cutout on the front of the Huawei Mate 40 Pro there is a camera called Ultra Vision Selfie Camera of 13 megapixels with an aperture f / 2.4, which Huawei accompanies with a 3D sensor. In combination, this system should allow, not only better self-portraits, but also improve the gesture system to use the mobile without touching it.
This front camera introduces Adaptive Ultra Wide Angle Support technology through which the camera adapts to each situation and knows if you are taking group or panoramic selfies, in portrait or landscape orientation.
Big news in software
The smartphone is one of the first to hit the market with EMUI 11, based on Android 10 AOPS without GMS.
During the presentation of the Huawei Mate 40 Pro the brand has influenced the best present in the HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) that mainly affect the App Gallery. Huawei’s app store receives improvements, adopting a format that benefits vertical scrolling, more clearly separating apps from games. There is less density of apps on the screen, in exchange for displaying more relevant information for the user. In addition, a wish list is incorporated in which users can request the arrival of new apps from Huawei experts.
To this we have to add the improvements added to Petal Searh, focused on image recognition, not only roughness by text or voice and the introduction of Petal Maps, the brand’s alternative to Google Maps.
Regarding MIUI 11 news, the brand announces for the Mate 40 Pro EoD (Eyes on Display), an AOD option that is only activated if the mobile detects that it is being looked at. In the same way, new gestures are added such as, for example, putting your hand on top of the mobile to turn on the screen, something very useful when you are cooking.
And the Huawei Mate 40 or Mate 40 Pro +?
The brand this year has only decided to bring the Huawei Mate 40 Pro to Spain in its version with 8 GB of RAM (one with 12 GB of memory will be sold in China). Although the Mate 40 and Mate 40 Pro + have also been presented, there are no great explanations for this decision other than to focus sales on the middle of the family models.
Mate 40
The smartphone sports a screen with less curvature (68º) and less size. It reaches 6.5 inches with FullHD + resolution maintaining an aspect ratio despite having only a front camera, without a 3D sensor. In addition, the refresh rate remains at 90 Hz.
The camera undergoes changes in its ultra wide angle, which drops to 16 MP at the same time that the telephoto lens, no longer of the periscope type, is 8 MP resolution and its 3x optical zoom.
Its battery is 4,200 mAh with a charging speed lower than that of the Pro model, of 40W.

Maintaining the same front and rear design, with an identical 6.76-inch screen, the top of the range of the firm has the same characteristics as the Huawei Mate 40 Pro inside. Its big difference is in the addition of two additional rear sensors on the camera:
- 12 MP telephoto with f / 2., OIS and 3x magnification
- ToF sensor that improves the depth information of the shots
In addition, the periscope-type lens changes, becoming 8 MP, with f / 4.4, OIS and a 10x optical zoom and the recording can be up to 8K.

The smartphone will go on sale the first half of November in black and white in our country, although there is also a Mystic Silverc model with a reflective finish, as can be seen in the photographs.
