How to know if your computer or mobile is compatible with the new WiFi 6

WiFi 6 is increasingly present in our daily lives. There are more and more devices that have this connectivity , including new routers and amplifiers installed by operators, as well as laptops, mobiles and desktop computers. However, we may have a compatible device at home and we don’t know it, and we are going to help you identify it.

With Wi- Fi 6 , our devices can work over the wireless network much better than with previous standards. We have higher speed, higher capacity and greater range. Therefore, if you can, try to buy a device compatible with this new network.

Look in the box or in comparators

If you still have the product box, the WiFi Alliance requires manufacturers to make it clear on the box what standards the product supports. Normally we will find a sticker in which the logo with “WiFi 6 Certified” appears.

If you have thrown away the box, or you can’t find it in it, another option you have is to look for the technical data sheet on the Internet . When it comes to mobiles, there are many comparators or specification websites. In them, we must look for data such as WiFi 6 , or its technical name, such as WiFi 802.11ax . The previous one, WiFi 5, is 802.11ac, where only the last letter changes, so it is important not to confuse them.

Manufacturer websites or the WiFi Alliance, other options

On the official websites of the manufacturers we can also search for the specifications of each product. Ultimately, if for whatever reason we do not find the information on any of those sites, we have the option of going to the WiFi Alliance’s own website ( Wi-Fi.org ), where by entering the name and model of the product, we The Wi-Fi standard that it supports will be displayed, as well as other additional information, such as the WPA standard that it uses and other additional security and connectivity features.

Future Movistar WiFi 6 router on the WiFi Alliance website

If you have a WiFi 6 router , but your mobile or computer is not, don’t worry, because the standard is backwards compatible and you will be able to continue using your devices. However, you will not be getting the most out of your network. Despite this, replacing products such as computers or mobile phones is something we do every several years, so sooner or later you will end up having a device with this connectivity.

In Spain, the large operators already have WiFi 6 routers or devices. In the case of Orange, the operator already installs it in all new fiber subscriptions. Vodafone is also equipping it in many new registrations, and Movistar offers the Smart WiFi 6 Amplifier. The operator, however, should start offering the Smart WiFi 6 Router in the coming months, since we saw that it was certified by Wi-Fi Alliance last September. Since 2021, it is difficult to find a new device that does not support WiFi 6, and even more and more are compatible with WiFi 6E , which also operates with the 6 GHz band.
