Apple is very familiar with that of setting a trend and even revolutionizing an industry, something on a much larger scale. It happened with the iPod in 2001 and with the original iPhone in 2007. Still far from what these devices achieved, the company could now create a new trend with its new iPhone 12 mini. This small 5.4-inch is the brand’s smallest smartphone since the “all-screen” iPhones were introduced. A study now reaffirms what was for many a fact.
Apple does not abandon small phones
Apple resisted for years to accept the growing demand for phones with larger screens. Even when he dared with the iPhone 6 Plus in 2014 he wanted not to leave out the compact ones with the normal version of iPhone 6 with 4.7 inches. These two versions were followed by the next three generations, including models of the same 4.7 and 5.5 inches. While it is true that the iPhone X, XS and 11 Pro with 5.8 inches had a larger screen in proportions, the truth is that the size of that iPhone was not as bulky as that of the ‘Plus’ era. In fact, in identical sizes, devices with 6.5 inches such as the XS Max and 11 Pro Max have been launched. Even this year they reach 6.7 inches with the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Despite growing in size and screen dimensions, the company has always kept more compact phones for sale. When these have become somewhat outdated, equipment such as the iPhone SE 2020 with a classic design, but compact with 4.7 inches, has been launched. With the iPhone 12 mini, the company wanted to satisfy the most demanding in design and performance, with a team with plenty of capacities and with the same design as its older brothers, only with a size that even fits in a shirt pocket as shown by the brand in your advertising spots.
The rest of the brands look at the iPhone 12 mini
There are many people who use their smartphones as their main tool even for work. Both these aspects and those of consuming multimedia content are very appreciated in a larger screen size. However, there is a market that is still very booming and that has been somewhat forgotten by the rest of the brands: small mobiles. The Google Pixel 4a launched several months ago was already well received for this reason, now having Apple as an exponent with its new ‘mini’ model.
In a recent study carried out by Kantar, this consumption data has been more accurately detailed. It is said that 12% of users are looking for a phone that fits in their hand and / or pocket. This would be in principle the niche of the target audience of the iPhone 12 mini and since we are talking about millions of people, it is clear that it is a very sweet cake to let Apple eat it alone. This is where perhaps other brands such as Xiaomi could come in, from which reports have recently come out indicating that it works on a device of a similar size to the iPhone 12 mini for its range of smartphones.

The market will continue to evolve and for sure that large phones will continue to dominate the main sales rankings and even take the most cutting-edge functionalities. However the small devices seem to be about to return and only time will tell if to stay or as a fad. However, that so many people continue to prefer sub-standard sizes after so many years is a clear indication that this will remain.
