Firefox Proton, Features of the New Design and How to Test it

Mozilla is still looking for a way to win over users, gain trust and stand up to its two great rivals: Chrome and Edge. Mozilla’s browser has already received major complete changes and facelifts to adapt to the new times to offer users a clear, simple and fast interface. After some time with Firefox Quantum, that interface has started to become a bit outdated, and, responding to requests from the community, the company has started to work to update its browser. This is Proton .

How is the new Firefox interface

Mozilla wants Proton to be as simple, fast and modern as possible. The last time the company allowed us to see and test details of it was in February of this year, however, many things have already changed since then, allowing us to get an idea right now of everything it will offer us.

The first point where we will see changes will be in the general interface itself. This, in addition to opening much faster, we can see it much more collected and organized . the interface is much more careful in every way, and to a great extent it will remind us of Edge in the way in which some elements are displayed, such as the tabs at the top.

The Firefox options menu has radically changed. Although we could already have a first contact with it weeks ago, we can see that now Mozilla has debugged it much more. Not only does it have rounded corners , but the elements are further apart and there are no icons to overload the look.

The new tab section has also changed. Although it still looks a lot like the original look, the Firefox new tab section now has much more neat and organized elements.

And another aspect that has changed a lot is the notices . The information panels of a website that we open we can see that they have the elements much more ordered, in addition to their rounded corners.

And we can also see how other types of warnings, such as confirming the closing of several tabs at the same time, have also received a radical facelift compared to what we can find in the latest stable version of the browser.

At the moment, Proton is still in development, and although it is already in the final stages of its development, we could still see some more changes. Of course, this is unlikely to happen.

How to try Proton right now

Firefox Proton is scheduled to arrive with the release of Firefox 89 stable , version scheduled for May 18, 2021. Currently, the latest stable version of Firefox is 87, so there is only one more release left before all users receive, yes or yes, the new browser interface.

If we don’t want to wait for the launch of Firefox 89 to test the new interface, we can do it right now by downloading and installing the Nightly version of the browser . This edition is already in version 89, so we can test all its features with it. Of course, many of the features of this interface are disabled, so we will have to activate them by hand from their corresponding flags. These can be found by searching and activating everything that matches ” browser.proton “, “browser.aboutwelcome” and “browser.tabs.secondaryTextUnsupportedLocales”.

The new Proton interface, combined with Firefox’s WenRender, will certainly take the browser to a new level. It may finally start to seriously stand up to Chrome and Edge, complicated as it may be.
