An Error in Windows 10 20H2 Does Not Allow to Keep the Data When Updating

Windows 10 20H2 Does Not Allow to Keep the Data

The new version of Windows 10, October 2020 Update, or 20H2 , has already been with us since the end of last October. This has been a small update, with few new features and many fixes, to improve the user experience. And, although at first there have been no problems with this new update, there are bugs that, if we do not have them controlled, can be very expensive. They can even cause us to lose all of our personal data.

The new version 20H2 of Windows 10 is installed automatically through Windows Update. If we have the PC up to date, this update will occupy less than 100 megabytes and will install in just a few minutes. However, there are other ways to update your PC to the latest version. One of them is to use the Media Creation Tool, MCT, which will allow us to perform a complete installation of the operating system while maintaining the data and settings.

MCT - Actualizar versión 2004

This tool allows us to choose if we want to save all our files and applications, if we only want to save the files and delete the rest, or if we do not want to save anything. The options are practically the same that we will find, for example, when restoring Windows 10.

If you use the media creation tool, you will lose your data

Due to an error in Windows 10, users who are using this tool to reinstall the latest version of Windows on their computers to the most modern versions are realizing that the only option that the wizard allows is to not save anything . That is, the option that will erase all our programs, data, and settings to leave Windows as just installed.

MCT - Error versión 20H2

It is not known exactly why this happens. Microsoft is already aware of the error and it is expected that with the next security patches, by December of this year, it will be solved. However, for now, we will have to live with him. Or, if not, uninstall the update to revert to version 2004.

The media creation tool to go from the May 2020 Update to the October 2020 Update works without problems.

Go back to Windows 10 version 2004

If we want to use MCT to reinstall the operating system, we will not be able to do it from 20H2, but we will have to go back to version 2004. As this is a relatively small update, uninstalling the patch is very simple and fast.

What we must do is go to the Windows update history (we can use the search engine to quickly get to it), and look for the update that corresponds to 20H2. Specifically, the patch that we have to uninstall is KB4562830 .

After deleting it, we restart the computer and, when Windows turns on again, we will be using Windows 10 20H1, the 2004 version of the operating system. Now, the media creation tool will work without problems. We can use it to reinstall Windows 10 without losing data and applications. When the reinstallation process is finished, we can manually update to Windows 10 version 20H2 again.

If Microsoft finally solves this error with the December patches for its operating system, we will be able to use this tool again without any problem.
