All, absolutely all mobile phone manufacturers are striving to be the first to launch a smartphone with the camera under the screen . This technology would allow you to enjoy a screen without frames or notch or holes on the screen that focuses all the user’s attention on the content.
After seeing how VIVO or ZTE are already close to launching their first phones with this “invisible camera”, now it is Xiaomi who joins this race by showing its first smartphone with a video camera under the screen. In addition, the brand takes the opportunity to show the progress made in this regard to improve the “concealment” of the front sensor of the mobile.

Xiaomi’s invisible camera
Xiaomi showed a prototype with an under-screen selfie camera last year, but an executive later clarified that the technology was not ready to reach the consumer. That is precisely what is changing now as Xiaomi has confirmed that it will launch a phone with a hidden camera under the mobile display in 2021. Xiaomi talks about this third-generation camera module under the screen that works thanks to the “pixel arrangement self-developed “ with twice the horizontal and vertical pixels, thus achieving the same pixel density as in the rest of the panel.
The self-developed pixel arrangement used in Xiaomi’s third generation under-display camera technology allows the display to let light pass through the sub-pixel separation area, allowing each pixel to retain a pattern of Full RGB sub-pixels without sacrificing pixel density.
Compared to other common solutions on the market, Xiaomi has doubled the number of horizontal and vertical pixels, achieving the same pixel density on the camera as in the rest of the display area. Therefore, the area above the integrated camera shows the same brightness, color gamut, and color accuracy as the rest of the screen.

Mobile video with camera under screen
On paper, what this technology does is hide the camera module 100% below the screen , as its resolution, brightness, contrast, etc. coincide with the characteristics of the rest of the panel. This in turn allows working with a mobile with a more immersive full-screen design without sacrificing the quality of the capture.
In this video we can see how the system works
