Why Not All iPhones Offer Wireless Reverse Charging

Reverse battery charging has been a feature of Android phones for several years. But in the case of the iPhone , we have waited for it all this time, and yes, we have had it, although it could be said halfway. And also not all models are compatible, but having it, it has it in a certain way.

And as you know, Apple does not advertise that their phones have reverse charging, but the reality is that since the middle of this year they have something quite similar, but it does not run in the way we all expect.

Reverse charging is not perfect, but it is a very widespread feature among high-end Android devices, with it we can charge headphones, a smart watch and other accessories by simply letting them rest on the back of the phone. This is a burden that was rumored a lot for both the iPhone 12 and the 13 , but that ultimately did not reach them as such. Today you cannot charge these accessories in this way, but technically these phones do have reverse charging. And it is thanks to the new Magsafe technology, which, as you know, was released in the past with the iPhone 12.

These phones, having this technology, offered us the possibility of charging the phone using one of these batteries magnetically coupled to the back of the phone. This is not a reverse charge, but a traditional phone wireless charging. But this past summer that changed, with the arrival of a new Magsafe battery on the market. This could not only charge the iPhone, but it could also be charged by it without the need for cables.

Therefore, yes, the iPhone has a reverse charge, although it is very limited, as much as Magsafe and at the moment only one accessory, the battery compatible with this technology.

What iPhone are compatible?

For now, the reverse charge as such, in the way we know it in other mobiles, does not exist in the iPhone. But if this Magsafe functionality serves as a reverse load, we can try to do it with some of the latest models of the brand. On this occasion, it is both all iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 that are compatible with Magsafe, and therefore with that reverse charge of one of its external batteries. But nothing else, we will not be able to charge other devices, such as AirPods, or the Apple Watch directly with the back of the iPhone.

For that we will still have to wait, but the existence of Magsafe should make us more optimistic about it. And, as you know, Apple is usually very careful when it comes to innovating, and does not tend to quickly embrace the main novelties that reach the mobile phones of its competition. But at least we know that with this technology this traditional reverse charging is closer , and in fact it is a reality, although in a very limited way. A charge that when we have compatible accessories is very useful, because it allows us to recharge them, at least in part, without having to carry numerous accessories.
