What happened to Meizu? The mobile brand that competed with Xiaomi

Back in 2014, there were many Chinese mobile phone manufacturers who wanted to gain a foothold in the world market, with their sights set specifically on Spain. Among them we found Meizu, a company that through fans of technology had gained recognition at the level of Xiaomi or Huawei. However, things did not end the same way.

Little by little it was disappearing from the map and Meizu phones stopped being talked about in Spain . It has not been the only company that has gone through this situation, as we can even mention BQ, which ended up disappearing. Other companies that, like this one, pointed out ways to innovate on their smartphones, limited themselves only to the Asian continent.

What happened to Meizu

He stood up to Xiaomi and lost out

The great ‘boom’ of smartphones made things much easier for those who work with technologies, including Meizu. This Chinese company began by manufacturing music players , the popular MP3s that expanded worldwide. His great success allowed him to bill on a large scale, which led him to invest and create the mobile brand that we remember today. His arrival in the telephone industry was like a breath of fresh air, since in China everything was flattery that focused so much on the quality of the materials, the performance and above all the good value for money that they offered, especially with the legendary Meizu M8.

The year 2011 arrived and with it, his first phone with the Android operating system. Its good acceptance and the great equipment led it to stand up against Samsung as a direct rival in the market of origin, at the same time that Apple and the iPhone 4s were causing a sensation. Little by little, the firm managed to expand with its own stores in China and even in Russia , reaching the next level, when it launched a customization layer that was named Flyme OS.

We go back in time to 2014 and 2015, at which time Xiaomi and Meizu gradually arrived in Spain through buyers daring to export phones. Many will remember the Xiaomi Mi4 or the first Xiaomi Redmi Note, some phones that opened the doors to the rabbit firm all over the planet. For its part, Meizu had the Meizu MX2 or the M1 Note in its hands, really good smartphones, but they were not able to overcome their tough rival, neither on the continent where they had a presence, nor outside of it.

Importing mobiles is no longer interesting

Since mobile phone brands with all kinds of support were arriving and appearing in Spain, fewer and fewer technology fans were buying imported phones. That coincided with the landing of Xiaomi or Huawei in our country and, therefore, those that were left behind lost all their potential. Among them we find Meizu, who, although he tried to settle in Spain, did not know how to win his position and his rivals ate his toast. On the other hand, the growth of Xiaomi has not stopped growing and has become a world benchmark, leaving its rival one day forgotten. That is clearly reflected today on the Meizu website in Spain, where we see how it has been relatively frozen in time.

We can see how it shows us the Meizu M6 Note and Meizu M5c, as the latest releases. In turn, we can come across the Meizu Pro 7, a phone that arrived in 2017, trying to convince us with an innovation that no one had imagined until now, a phone with 2 screens. The large investment that this entailed was not enough to attract the attention of buyers and since then, its presence in Spain has plummeted.

On the page itself, if we try to tap on the contact or more information buttons, we are redirected directly to its online portal in English , since it continues to struggle to find its site in other European countries. Their intentions to grow are still active, but much more limited than they would like.

Currently, Meizu has not died as a mobile brand, its main market is in China, where, for example, the Meizu 18 attracts attention for its advanced technologies. In this case, they are terminals with power and good cameras, which could be worthy rivals with a good price , but their poor adaptation in the software and their null technical service make us forget them. Who knows, maybe in a few years they will try again and Meizu will be the revelation again
