If you have a Mac with a somewhat limited hard drive, you have probably had to juggle more than once to install a new application or create a new file. That is why you have surely resorted to third-party applications that help you perform a disk cleanup, but the truth is that they are not necessary a priori. Natively, macOS includes a series of recommendations that you should consult to avoid installing these third-party applications.

Remove charge to your Mac without third-party applications
Apple is slowly integrating its operating systems much more with the iCloud cloud. That is why many tools are included so that we can automatically store our files with iCloud to optimize the storage of our internal hard drive. To be able to consult these optimization recommendations on our Mac, we simply follow the following steps:
- In the upper left corner, press the logo and Apple and then we will select the section ‘About this Mac’ .
- We will see information about the equipment and at the top we must choose the ‘Storage’ tab.
- Together with the storage information of our Mac, classified in different categories, we will have the option ‘Manage’ on which we will click and automatically we will get a series of recommendations to optimize storage.
In the left part of the window that emerges we can see different categories of optimization . At the beginning we observe the section ‘Recommendations’ where you find tremendously interesting options that are the following:
- Save to iCloud. To avoid having all your files on the Mac, the most convenient is to store them in the personal cloud. The Mac will intelligently keep those oldest documents in the cloud and will only be downloaded when we want to use them.
- Optimize storage. Sometimes we have files on our computer that are totally unnecessary and that we don’t even know is there. For example, the TV shows or the episodes of Apple TV that you have already seen is silly that they are stored.
- Empty the trash automatically. If we are somewhat forgetful, we will not regularly delete the file bin. That is why we can activate a 30-day timer so that all files that have been in the trash for a month are automatically deleted.
- Reduce clutter: The Mac will scan your hard drive for files that are large enough and also that you don’t use. It will determine the last opening date of a specific document so you can choose whether you want to delete it or not.
There are many programs that we can find in the network that perform some of these basic tasks that can be performed natively. Some of these sometimes end up taking up more space on the hard drive than what they release with their tasks, so we must have a lot of eye with what we install on our computers.
It is certainly important to have the hard disk as optimized as possible, especially if you have very little total space. There are already many of us who recommend that on Mac you have to have a minimum free space of 256 GB and in many cases you can also finish quite short. It is always interesting to take a look at the distribution of storage in our equipment to know where we should optimize a little more.
