With the arrival of iOS 17, a wave of fresh features has graced our devices, and today, we’re here to unveil a nifty new trick tucked away in the Clock application. Until now, setting an alarm always required selecting a sound for it to play. But with iOS 17, the game has changed, introducing exciting new options for alarm customization. In this post, we’ll dive deeper into this clever feature.
The convenience of activating a silent, vibrating alarm is invaluable for many scenarios. With iOS 17, our alarm customization options have expanded, allowing us to set an alarm with no audible tone, relying solely on the iPhone‘s vibration as the indicator. And yes, you can keep your device’s volume turned up – this setting applies exclusively to the alarm itself.

Here’s how to set up a vibration-only alarm:
To make your iPhone alarm vibrate without any sound, you won’t need to fiddle with the volume switch or set your device to silent mode. These adjustments can be made during the alarm configuration process. However, a crucial prerequisite is ensuring that your iPhone has vibration enabled by default.
Before setting the alarm, double-check that your iPhone’s vibration is always activated. To do this, navigate to Settings > Sound and Vibrations > Vibrations. Here, ensure that the “Do not play” option is not selected. If it is, vibrations won’t work, and your alarm won’t produce any sound or vibration.

Once you’ve confirmed this setting, proceed to configure the alarm. To do this, open the Clock application. Inside the app, navigate to the “Alarms” tab. Here, you can create a new alarm or modify an existing one. Regardless of your choice, the crucial step is accessing the “Edit alarm” section.
Among the four options located beneath the hours and minutes wheel, focus on the “Sound” section. First, head to the top, where you’ll find a section labeled “Vibration.” Tap on it, and you’ll discover several vibration patterns to choose from. Select your preferred pattern. Next, navigate back to the “Sound” category.

With the list of tones and sounds before you, scroll to the bottom. Here, choose “None.” By configuring your alarm in this manner – activating phone vibration, setting a vibration pattern for the alarm, and selecting “None” for the sound – your alarm will remain completely silent, emitting only vibrations when it’s time to wake you up.
