Running Out of Phone Storage? Try These 3 Clever Tricks to Expand Memory

Have you ever encountered the frustrating situation of running out of space on your smartphone, making it impossible to install additional apps? Don’t worry; it’s a common issue that many of us have faced. To help you gain more storage space for your favorite applications, I’m here to share three valuable tricks that can expand your device’s memory.

I’ve personally dealt with this challenge, particularly when handling my parents’ smartphones, which often come with limited storage capacities of 32 or 64 GB. These devices quickly fill up with photos, videos, and files sent via messaging apps like WhatsApp. As soon as they receive that dreaded “insufficient storage” message, I employ the following strategies:

Utilize a MicroSD Card:

Many people overlook this option, assuming that the slot in their phone is solely for the SIM card. However, numerous smartphones provide a straightforward method for increasing your device’s capacity by inserting a microSD card (if your model permits it). Depending on your choice of microSD card, you can add up to 1 TB of extra space. Here’s how to do it:

  • Turn off your smartphone.
  • Use the appropriate tool to remove the SIM card tray.
  • Insert the microSD card into the designated slot on the tray and reinsert it into your mobile device.
  • Power on your phone and navigate to the Settings menu.
  • Access the Storage section.
  • Confirm that the microSD card appears as an available option.

Once your microSD card is recognized, you can choose to use it as internal or external storage. Using it as internal storage allows you to move applications to the card, freeing up valuable space on your phone. Alternatively, external storage enables you to store photos, videos, and files but not applications.

Declutter Your Smartphone:

Another effective method to reclaim storage space on your smartphone is to delete unnecessary files or items that consume significant space. You can do this manually or use applications like CCleaner, which assists in cleaning your device by identifying unused apps, duplicate photos, junk files, and more.

  • Remove duplicate, blurry, or unwanted photos and videos. Consider using Google Photos to back up your media to the cloud before deleting them from your phone.
  • Uninstall applications you no longer use or that occupy substantial space. In your device’s storage settings, you can view the space usage of each app and uninstall those consuming excessive storage.
  • Delete downloaded files you no longer require, such as documents, PDFs, or ZIP files, by using a file explorer to access the Downloads folder.
  • Clear the cache data of your apps, which consists of temporary files generated during app usage. You can perform this cleanup through your device’s security and management tool by selecting the “clean” or “optimize” option.

Opt for Lite Apps:

  • Consider using lightweight versions of popular applications, such as Facebook Lite, Instagram Lite, or Spotify Lite. These apps not only occupy less space but also consume less data and perform efficiently on devices with limited memory or slower connections. To access them, simply search for these lite versions in your app store and install them like any other app.

By implementing these three strategies, you can effectively address the issue of low storage space on your smartphone and ensure that you have ample room for your favorite apps and essential files.
