At the beginning of the year, news broke that Apple was planning to do a facelift to the aesthetics of its iPad Air range, making them more similar to the ‘Pro’ models. This idea was taking shape until several weeks ago several data were leaked that confirmed this fact. Now, just a few hours after they are presented, we review their possible characteristics.
An iPad Air almost identical to the iPad Pro 2018
If we take as a reference the small iPad Pro launched by Apple in 2018 we could have a very accurate idea of what the new tablet in the ‘Air’ range would be. In design they would be practically traced, with a front all screen that could also be 11 inches in size, a rear with a single camera and possibly a flash, in addition to the location of the Smart Connector . Precisely this last feature would allow it to be compatible with the Magic Keyboard with trackpad .
Returning to compatibility, the Apple Pencil 2 could also be used in this tablet. We recall that in addition to being aesthetically different from the first generation, this stylus is also faster, more accurate and adds a touch gesture that allows you to perform some additional functions.
However there are certain differences. The first is that it will not have a 120 Hz refesco rate , since the so-called ProMotion technology would remain exclusive to the models aimed at professionals. We would also check the absence of Face ID in favor of a more than possible Touch ID in the lock button , this being an unprecedented location so far on an Apple tablet and that was never seen on an iPhone either.
Also the processor could be different. The ‘Pro’ 2018 incorporates an A12X Bionic, while the ‘Air’ could incorporate an A13 Bionic identical to that of the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and SE 2020. For this part it would have plenty of power and it would also be guaranteed that it can be updated for many years, as iPadOS will continue to bring its new versions to processors that are currently 4-5 years old.
A novelty that will be of this iPad Air, but that is already in the ‘Pro’ is the USB-C connector , which would serve to give a substantial change to this device allowing it to be used with multiple external accessories that work through this standard. For example, an external iPad compatible SSD.
As for internal memory , we remember that the current range of iPad Air 3 starts from 64 GB with versions also of 256 GB. Some sources suggest that this base memory could continue to be present in the new generation although who knows if any will be added beyond 256 GB. Apple probably takes with this device a differentiated strategy from the iPad Pro, which already starts from 128 GB in its most recent versions.
The price is already something really difficult to predict. The models still present in the Apple Store start at 549 euros, but the price may be increased by the new features that it will have. Of course, the change is not expected to be very large. Some suggest that the difference could be 50 euros , which is not too much if we consider that this new iPad Air 2020 could be a more than ideal option compared to the ‘Pro’ for a good handful of users.
It only remains to wait until tomorrow the 15th, the Apple Event begins and these and other features of this long-awaited iPad become official (or not).
