LG is one of those companies that is not afraid to jump into the pool. If risk and innovation are to be applauded, the Korean company has been teaching a lesson in daring for years. The latest invention of the firm is the LG Wing, a smartphone that features a dual-screen design with a rotating design . However, LG is not planning to stop there, and we can already see what its next step might look like.

During the presentation of the LG Wing, the company showed a brief preview of a new device that will be part of the Explorer Project. This terminal seems to have a retractable screen, just in the style of the latest patent revealed by LetsGoDigital and which reveals a design that could be materialized in a real smartphone.
“Stretchable” screen
The patent has been filed with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) and shows a terminal with a flexible display that can be partially rolled up inside the case . This means that the user will be able to have a normal mobile in their hands, but that it has a system that allows a screen to slide to one of the sides, which turns the terminal into a tablet.

When this screen is removed, the left and right frame edges will move, so that the roll-up screen is well protected by the case, being able to use the frame edges as a grip. The type of screen of this device is OLED and has a metal casing, which also includes a kind of lock, to prevent the screen from unintentionally extending. The documentation attached to the patent also details that this system is more durable than the folding smartphones we know, since it does not have a bending point that always suffers in the same place.

Of course, this type of device seeks once again to mix the traditional use of a smartphone with the multimedia or multitasking possibilities offered by having a much larger screen when necessary. The details of the patent indicate that the interface is fully adaptable to the user’s needs, and can be used in multiple display modes.

Will it be a reality?
We still cannot know if this device will become a reality. However, some Korean media have indicated that LG is working on a funky smartphone with the codename “Project B”. The device would have a similar design to this patent and would see the light of day in March 2021. We know that LG dares to do everything and that it is not the first time that the company flirts with designs that offer various possibilities on the screen. In addition to the recent Wing, LG has released dual-screen cases for the LG G8x or the V60 ThinQ.
