In 2017, Apple introduced the AirPower, a wireless charging pad designed to charge the iPhone X, Apple Watch, and Apple AirPods. This accessory promised a revolutionary feature – the ability to charge devices anywhere on the pad, rather than specific points. Despite its initial presentation in 2017 and a planned release in 2018, Apple abruptly canceled the project in March 2019 due to unforeseen development challenges.

The First Prototype: Kosutami’s Discovery
Apple enthusiast and collector, known as Kosutami, managed to obtain the first-ever version of the AirPower. This initial prototype featured 15 charging coils, unlike later models that had up to 22, with small spaces between them separated by a layer of metal.
Surprisingly, the prototype was fully functional, even charging a smartwatch. When a device was placed on it, an animation appeared, revealing information about the charging base, such as the firmware installation date in March 2017, along with commands to select specific coils and more.
However, Kosutami discovered that while the product was functional in some aspects, it had significant drawbacks. When devices were not precisely aligned, the AirPower could reach high temperatures, potentially causing damage or burns on the devices placed on it. For instance, an AirPods Pro charging case started melting on the charging base.
Apple’s Decision to Abandon the Project
In 2019, Apple officially abandoned the AirPower project, citing its inherent issues. The charging base had been initially presented with great excitement, but the company ultimately wasn’t confident in its success.
Apple shifted its focus to developing alternative accessories like MagSafe and MagSafe Duo, discontinuing the pursuit of AirPower.
Looking Ahead: A New Charging Base?
As of now, Apple has not given up on the idea of a charging base similar to the AirPower, although there is no confirmed release date. If such a product were to make it to market, it could potentially redeem Apple’s earlier setback or become one of the biggest failures under Tim Cook’s leadership, one of the most prominent CEOs in the tech industry.
Introducing the MagSafe Removable Battery
In light of the AirPower’s history, let’s explore a noteworthy successor, the MagSafe removable battery.
The MagSafe wireless battery boasts a 10,000mAh capacity, providing all-day power for your devices. With a single charge, you can replenish the iPhone 12, 13, 14, and 15 approximately 1.4 times, and their Pro and Pro Max versions once.
This battery supports Apple’s MagSafe technology, using the latest magnetic suction technology for immediate charging upon contact. It offers power transfer rates of 15W, 10W, 7.5W, and 5W, catering to various device needs.
It’s worth noting that this magnetic wireless charging solution incorporates safety features to prevent overloads, short circuits, restart issues, and high-temperature concerns.
