Not long ago we were warning about the possible increase in the digital canon in Spain . Well, it has already been confirmed. The Government of our country has made the decision definitively. Therefore, from now on, it will cost a little more for future buyers to buy any device: mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, computers…
This somewhat controversial decision will make future buyers of electronic devices have to pay a little more. The digital canon landed in Spain on August 1, 2017, since then, its price has been maintained, until today. There is no doubt that it is an important source of income, since it has managed to raise a total of 211.2 million euros since its entry into force that year.
New digital canon rates
The reason why this extra tax is applied is, basically, to compensate for the possible use made of these devices to make private copies of books, movies, series, discs and all kinds of digital content.
In any case, they have now decided to raise this extra price that every buyer has to pay. Therefore, as of July 1 , the new digital canon rates will be applied to devices in Spain. Therefore, from that moment on, buying any mobile phone, computer, hard drive or similar will be a little more expensive for the user. To give you an idea, we leave you a series of products with their new digital canon prices that will begin to be added in July 2023:
- SSD to integrate up to 256 GB: 0.90 euros.
- Android Wear OS / IOS multimedia smart watch : 2.50 euros.
- Equipment with integrated disk up to 1 TB: 3.00 euros.
- Android / IOS / HarmonyOS smartphone over 128.01 GB: 3.25 euros.
- Android / IOS / HarmonyOS tablet up to 32 GB: 3.75 euros.
- Desktop and laptop PC up to 1 TB: 5.33 euros.
- Peripheral hard disk HDD more than 6.01 TB: 6.45 euros.
And this is just one example, since, in the list that the Government of Spain has officially published in the BOE, we can find up to a total of 40 electronic products in which this new digital canon rate is applied.
Rise up to 200%
With these data, seeing the different prices that will be applied in the digital canon to the devices, we can see how there is a rise of up to 200% in some particular products . The lowest rate is 0 euros for single function printers of up to 39 copies. On the other hand, the most expensive option within these new digital canon prices is found in peripheral HDD hard drives of more than 6 TB.
In addition, another interesting fact is that the initial list of devices for 2017, which had 104 products, now only has the 40 items that we mentioned before, such as electronic devices, equipment or supports that are capable of producing, copying or storing a copy. of a protected work. And it is that, from the previous table, we can see how USB storage units or even televisions , among other products, have been eliminated.
