If we are users who love to collect a large amount of multimedia files on our computer, surely, the task of having everything organized can be more of a headache. And it is that organizing our own library is a task to which we must put a little dedication and patience since we surely have files in different formats. To help us know all the information in our files we can use a tool like MediaInfoXP .
To fool ourselves, having our multimedia file library perfectly organized is a cumbersome and unpleasant task. Going from file to file, seeing their properties and editing them ends up despairing. This often causes us to disregard this order. To help us know all the information about an audio or video file, we will use this program that we will see below.

MediaInfoXP will provide detailed information of the media files
MediaInfoXP is a free open source tool with which we can see the technical information of all our audio, image and video files. It is an alternative GUI for the open source tool MediaInfo but simpler. To start using it, all you have to do is download it from the developer’s website . The latest version available is v.20.03 , corresponding to April 03, 2020, so it has good support. We download a zip file, which when unzipping will find a folder with the file “MediaInfoXP.exe” . This file is portable and does not require installation, so we will only have to run it from any computer.
Supported formats
- Video: MKV, OGM, AVI, DivX, WMV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DVD (VOB), etc.
- Audio: WAV, OGG, MP3, RA, AC3, DTS, AAC, M4A, AU, AIFF, etc.
- Picture: JPG, PNG, TIFF, etc.
Start using MediaInfoXP without installation
Once executed, its main menu will appear with a simple and very minimalist design, in English, where we will hardly find buttons. In fact, it only has a total of four buttons, two located at the top and two others at the bottom.
Getting started with MediaInfoXP is as simple as dragging and dropping any audio, image or video file to its interface. If we prefer, it is also possible to add it using the “Analyze file” button at the bottom left. From here we will search for the desired file and add it. Once added, the program will take care of displaying all its properties on the screen so that it is easy for us to read and understand.

In total there are up to four categories of information that MediaInfoXP can show us, depending on the type of file:
- General : This category displays the file name, codec, format, file size, length, bit rate, and write application.
- Video : if our file is video, it will show us additional details such as the format type, the configuration, the codec ID, the frame rate, the duration, the bit rate, the width, the height, the aspect ratio, the color space, comprehension, as well as the size of the sequence.
- Audio : for audio files it will show us the format, format version, format profile, format settings, duration, bit rate mode, bit rate, channel (s), sample rate, frame rate, mode compression and transmission size.
- Image : in case of adding an image, it will inform us of its format, width, height, color space, chroma subsampling, bit depth, compression mode and transmission size.
If we prefer, MediaInfoXP also allows us to simultaneously load several types of files, showing us in a list all the properties of each file, separated by a line of dashes each of them. All the information provided by this tool can be copied and pasted to the clipboard.
Shell integration in Windows Explorer context menu
At the top of the interface we have the “Application” button and we will find the “Preference” option. Here we will find the entire MediaInfoXP preferences menu, which has various options, such as “Enable the Shell integration” , which will allow Shell integration in the Windows Explorer context menu, so that we can add a shortcut in the context menu of the explorer. This function can be useful if we want to select a group of files, right click and use the option “Analyze file with MediaInfoXP” and the program will automatically open.

Copy all available information to clipboard
To copy all the information we just have to right-click and a small menu will open. Here we will select “Copy to Clipboard” and paste it later in any word processor. If what we want is to erase all the information that we have in the interface, just press “Clear Display” in said menu, so it is not necessary for us to close and reopen the application.
