From this date, USB Type C will be mandatory

We already know the date on which any device sold in the European Union and, therefore, also in Spain, must have a USB Type-C port . At the beginning of June it was already clear that mobiles would charge with this type of port, since this measure comes from a long work by the EU in order to establish a single charger standard for electronic devices. However, we did not yet know the date of entry.

At the time when the European Parliament set the mandatory entry of the USB type-C port, it was marked that it would be mandatory by autumn 2024. Although, we were completely unaware of the effective date of this obligation. Well, today the day on which all devices for sale must have this port has become official.

USB Type C will be mandatory

USB Type C by the end of 2024

The European Union has already set an exact date, or rather a deadline, for all manufacturers to get an idea of when all the devices that go on sale in Europe and Spain will have the USB type-C port. and not another of the many that we can currently find. Therefore, all smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones, speakers, consoles, eReaders, keyboards, mice, among many other devices, that are sold within the EU, will have to have this port.

And, the specific date is from December 27, 2024, that is, all devices that are for sale on December 28, 2024 , must have a USB type-C port and not another. Type. And not only is the input of this USB established, but, if the load is greater than 15 W, USB Power Delivery must also be incorporated.

What is clear is that the company that will be most affected by this new regulation will be Apple. More than anything, because your devices use a specific port when charging with your lightning connector . So we will have to wait and see what happens in Spain with the iPhone and other devices that go on sale in 2024. Another important point is that, as of April 28, 2026, laptops sold within the EU will also have to have this type of connection in particular.

They want a reuse of the chargers

The main objective of this standardization on the type of charge is to achieve greater reuse of chargers. More than anything, because it is planned to also help consumers save up to 250 million euros a year on unnecessary purchases of chargers. In addition, discarded and unused chargers are also estimated to account for around 11,000 tons of e-waste per year . A fact that has also influenced the decision making.

However, it still remains for the different member states of the European Union to adopt and publish, before December 28, 2023, the different laws and regulations so that the date set by the EU for the mandatory entry of the USB type can be met. -C .
