The smartphone, in a short time, has become the nerve center of our multimedia consumption. Today we are used to using the mobile to listen to podcasts, music, the radio or to watch movies and series. For this reason, having the volume turned up or down by itself continuously can be a nuisance.
The cause of this problem can be very varied but, in general and as long as the mobile has not been wet or damaged, it is usually in the application that we use to reproduce the audio. It can also be very different if we are using headphones or if we are using the phone’s speakers.
Is it a problem with the mobile or the headphones?
The first of all is to distinguish if the problem happens only with headphones, or normally. If it happens when you use headphones, you will have to try others to rule out that the source of the problem is in the headphones. If it works fine with others, the bug is fixed.

If the same thing happens with any headset, the volume goes down and up as you please, or using the smartphone speakers, you will have to try other solutions like the ones shown in these lines.
Fix mobile volume failures
As we have said, the causes of the mobile raising and lowering the volume randomly can be due to many things. This is all you can do to fix the bug.
Is it only downloaded when receiving notifications?
For design reasons, if you have configured notification tones, incoming alerts will momentarily lower the volume of audio and video playback . This will help you avoid losing important messages while you are playing multimedia content but the volume will rise to the original level in a few seconds.
Is there a physical problem?
The first of all is to know if the mobile has taken a hit or is so dirty that the buttons are stuck and, therefore, have a “life of their own”. You can tell this because when you squeeze them it can sometimes appear that they are stuck and sometimes not. It could even be that something could be causing an internal short circuit and you wouldn’t even realize it.

In this case, you may want to replace the button “pads” inside the phone by taking it to technical support or a repair shop, but you can also try rubbing a small pad with very little alcohol on the buttons and then pressing them repeatedly, to they are completely cleaned. Repeat this a couple of times and see if this behavior goes away.
Is there a software problem?
Sometimes you go and find that you will not be able to do anything. There are times when a certain update damages the device as it happened with some Pixel models. In 2017 hundreds of users complained that their phones were experiencing random volume ups and downs with nothing being able to do.
@madebygoogle Since the latest update my (original) Pixel’s volume automatically goes down, the jack doesn’t work and the same for mic / phone speaker half the time – after 72 hours. That’s the second Pixel I have similar issues with and have to send back.

Generally, a new update usually fixes the problem, so whenever you experience any of these failures you must make sure that your mobile is up to date . You can check it from Settings, System, System update and find if you have any pending updates.
Does it only happen with an app?
If the problem happens to you, for example, with Spotify and not with the radio, watching Netflix, or with the mobile’s default music player, it seems quite clear that the problem is in the app.
In this case, the first thing you should do is check its settings as many have tools to normalize the volume that imply that the audio is lowered or raised automatically in certain situations. Continuing with the example of Spotify, when accessing its settings we see options such as “Crossfade”, which will mix the volumes of two songs, or the option to normalize volume.

If after configuring it and disabling these options, the problem still does not disappear, you can restart it from the Settings menu, Applications, Spotify (for example), Storage, and select Clear cache and Clear data. This will leave the app as received installed.
Restart the player
Before we talked about the problem may be in a specific app and most likely this application is the music player. As with Spotify, you can configure it to avoid possible volume alterations but if the problem persists you must also restart it from the Settings, Applications, Music player, storage, Clear cache and Clear data menu.

If the problem does not disappear after resetting the app, you can always try to download another player like VLC to see if the failure is replicated. If so, it is time to continue investigating.
Restart the mobile
The preferred solution for any computer scientist. When something is wrong with an electronic device, be it a mobile phone, a computer or a TV, the first thing you should do is restart it. This will eliminate possible legacy failures from running too long and probably fix the volume problem .
Do you have Dolby Atmos well configured?
Many users do not know that it has a special setting in the sound menu of their mobile that enables the Dolby Atmos options. This allows sounds to be equalized and altered depending on what is being heard.
Many of the smartphones that boast of Dolby Atmos sound have a “dynamic” sound option that automatically optimizes audio based on content to provide the best possible experience. This may imply that the volume of the mobile goes up or down by itself without realizing it. To deactivate it, go to Settings, Sound and Vibration, Double Atmos and uncheck the dynamic mode.

Hard reset
If you have come this far checking that the mobile phone physically resides well, that the problem is repeated in several applications, with or without headphones and that Dolby Atmos is correctly configured , you cannot do more than a factory reset to return the mobile to its original condition, like fresh out of its box.
This will erase all the data on the mobile, so before proceeding you must make a backup copy of all your data, as they will disappear during the Hard Reset. Once done, go to Settings and enter the option About the phone, locate the Backup and restore menu and select Delete all data.
This process may vary slightly depending on the phone we use.
Repair

If you have reset the phone completely and, unfortunately, the volume of the phone is still “crazy” you should take the phone to repair it. Contact the manufacturer if it is still under warranty or take the smartphone to technical support where they can detect the hardware error.
