Canon Patents an Osmo Pocket Camera with Interchangeable Lenses

Canon seems to be interested in creating its own DJI Osmo Pocket , although with the great difference and advantage of offering an interchangeable lens system with which to take advantage of many of its existing lenses.

Canon patents its own DJI Osmo Pocket

The Osmo Pocket by DJI is one of the most interesting cameras on the market and, in turn, one of the least valued by many users. And in part it is not fair, because the possibilities it offers are many for a device of such small dimensions.

Canon Patents Pocket Camera

It seems to us a great proposal, because it combines all that good work of DJI in terms of stabilization in a very compact body that allows you to always carry it with you and even use it in very particular situations where other types of cameras could not be operated.

Well, it seems that Canon agrees with us and logically sees the potential that a proposal of this type could have. Which could be identical to if DJI made a Pro version of the Osmo Pocket, but with the ZenMuse cameras.

And it is that from what can be seen in a Canon patent , the company would be thinking of developing an interchangeable lens camera that would offer an integrated gimbal with a much more comfortable to hold form factor and clearly designed for the video subject.

Thus, although with patents you always have to be very careful about all that that implies for a final product, this “Canon Osmo Pocket Pro” would have a handle that would serve to grip it in the same way as any other gimbal on the market. In the back it would have a screen that would allow to see what the sensor that is mounted on a two-axis stabilizer captures.

A sensor that would go inside a casing that, curiously, would have the option of a shoe through which accessories such as flashes, LED spotlights or similar could be mounted. Of course, we assume that with a maximum weight so that together with that of the objective itself, the stabilization system motors are able to compensate for the movements that occur.

For the rest, this proposal would also have different buttons that would serve to control actions such as the start and pause of the recording, etc. Ultimately, transferring the classic Canon camera format to a handheld gimbal with an interchangeable lens system.

Will Canon’s Osmo Pocket become a reality?

DJI OSmo Pocket

As we said, a pantente is not indicative that the product will see the light or that it does so immediately. It is true that it may just be a way to get an idea for a possible idea to develop in the future or for your competitors not to do the same, but it would be interesting to see something like that.

It is true that the grace or appeal of the DJI Osmo Pocket is that its size is very small. Here you are going to have to carry something of greater dimensions and that makes it lose some grace. It is true that interchangeable lenses is synonymous with greater creative possibilities, but knowing that there are very capable camera stabilizers, small and valid for different models, why would anyone want something so “closed”?

We suppose that facing a proposal focused on the vlogger field , as Panasonic or Sony have done this year with the Lumix G100 or Sony ZV1 it could be interesting, but in addition to this, it would have to be accompanied by a good price to be competitive.

We’ll see what happens in the future, for now just keep the idea that if you dreamed of an Osmo Pocket with interchangeable lenses, Canon could have the solution in the future.
