As every year, Apple announced the improvements and news in the cameras of its new iPhone. The iPhone 12 Pro, together with its “Max” variant, have reached the highest levels that Apple has ever offered and also, together with the fashion of having up to four sensors on the back. Now, the cameras of the iPhone 12 Pro have gone through the demanding tests of the famous DxOMark laboratory, where although it has revealed itself as the elite of current mobile photography, it has not been able to overcome the latest bets from Huawei and Xiaomi.

The DxOMark tests are taken into account both by users and even the brands themselves, who boast of these scores in their communication campaigns, and even showing the ranking on the web dedicated to the product. Many presaged that the new Apple would reach the ceiling in this ranking, but the truth is that despite achieving excellent results, it has not reached the levels of some of its Chinese rivals.
The iPhone 12 Pro is not number 1
Recall that the iPhone 12 Pro has three 12 megapixel sensors, including ultra wide angle lenses, telephoto and a new LiDAR depth sensor. In addition, it has a Dual-LED flash and is compatible with 4K, Dolby Vison and HDR. In the tests carried out by DxOMark, the terminal has reached a score of 128 points , taking into account that only the rear cameras have been tested. This positions the iPhone 12 Pro in fourth place in the ranking, surpassed by the Huawei Mate 40 Pro, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra and the P40 Pro, which occupy the first, second and third places respectively.

The good and bad
DxOMark claims that the improvements are remarkable in many respects, over last year’s iPhone 11 Pro . In addition, they highlight its better ability to record video thanks to HLG Dolby Vision technology, which offers a wider dynamic range than its rivals. Aspects such as the precision of autofocus or good lighting indoors have been highlighted.

However, the iPhone 12 Pro has received certain penalties in key aspects, offering a limited dynamic range that avoids having more detail in highlights and shadows. Additionally, bluish and green tones have been detected in outdoor shots and image noise, especially when lighting conditions begin to waver. However, and although it has improved compared to the previous model, the test reveals that there is loss of detail in the video recording and flashes on some occasions. Another aspect that has hurt the score of the iPhone 12 Pro has been its zoom capacity, so fashionable in the high-end smartphones of 2020 and that has positioned it behind its main competitors
What conclusion do we draw?
It must be borne in mind that DxOMark’s standard of demand can far exceed those of any average user, who will find an infallible ally in the iPhone 12 Pro camera. The good news is that the competition between the different Android manufacturers has made them continually move and improve to overcome their rivals.
This always benefits the end user and has allowed Huawei or Xiaomi to position themselves in the top positions. Something to always keep in mind is that these tests are always carried out in the early stages of the terminals for sale. We know that hardware can have enormous room for improvement, with the right software enhancements and updates.
