And it is that errors like this can become frustrating, since surely we will not know how it has occurred or what we have done wrong to make it appear. Luckily, it is a mistake that can be considered common, and one that can be easily fixed.

Causes of the black screen error with the cursor
The appearance of the black screen error with the cursor in view usually occurs in various circumstances. Either while we use it, or when we start up and even when we turn off our computer. We may, as always, start it up and unexpectedly come across this black screen. Or we have finished using it and when we turn off the error appears. It can also happen that it occurs while we are using the graphics or video card. This error is characterized by being a bit peculiar and different from others, as we will not see any message of the problem, only the black screen and the mouse pointer.
This is something that can happen for different reasons, such as failure of our graphics card, that it has failed or has problems with its drivers, as well as the screen, the connection or the video adapter. It could also be due to a hardware conflict in some of the PC’s components that is causing this problem, as well as incompatibility with some external accessories. Another reason would be that it occurs during the installation of a feature update that includes a compatibility issue.
Whatever the cause of this problem, we must know that it is possible to solve it before we go to the phone in search of a technician who will bring our computer back to life. That is why today we are going to propose some possible solutions.
Fix black screen error with cursor in view
Next, we are going to see what possible solutions we have available to solve the problem of black screen error with the cursor in Windows 10.
Hardware problem – Disconnect external devices
As we have commented, one of the causes of the appearance of the error with a black screen with the cursor may be due to problems with the hardware , so we must rule out that it has been caused by an external device. Therefore, we should start by disconnecting external devices that we have connected.
To do this, with the computer off, we begin to remove external devices, be it headphones, USB drives, microphone, etc. We hold down the power button for about 30 seconds, during which we see how the computer starts and shuts down. Later, we turn on the computer and check if the PC starts up without problems. If that happens we start connecting our external devices one by one, restarting the computer each time. In the event that the black screen appears again, we will have found the cause of it, so we will proceed to replace this element.
Disable Application Preparation
We are going to proceed to disable Application Preparation found within the Service Manager . This function is in charge of preparing the applications for use the first time we log in to the computer, having Manual as the default startup type. To access it, press the keyboard shortcut “Windows + R” and the “Execute” command will be activated. Here we will write the following command and press Enter:
services.msc
Once we have opened the Service Manager, we must locate the “Application Preparation” function in the list that appears. Once located we double click and a new window will appear. Next, in “Startup type”, we select “Disable”. We click “Apply” and “OK” to complete the changes.

By disabling the “Application Preparation” service, you should help us troubleshoot the problem. In case this is the case, we must reconfigure it “Manual” at the next startup.
Reinstall or update the graphics card
A problem with the graphics card drivers can be another problem that causes the black screen error. That is why we must try to reinstall or update the drivers to see if they are the cause of the problem.
For this we will have to access the Device Manager. We will do this by pressing the keyboard shortcut “Windows + R”, and within the Run window we write the following command and press Enter:
devmgmt.msc
Once in the Device Manager, we locate our graphics card , in the “Display adapters” section. Click on the adapter with the right button and click on the option “Update driver”. We can also choose the option to uninstall the device and then reinstall it. In this way we will have the graphics card drivers updated again and check if it has been the cause of the problem.

Use the System File Checker (SFC)
The problem of black screen with cursor in Windows 10 may be due to having system files that are corrupt. In order to solve it, we can use the SFC tool, which will look for corrupt system files and proceed to repair them. To do this, we must start the PC through Safe Mode. In the search box of the Start menu we write CMD and we will run the “Command Prompt” application as administrator.

Next, we write the following command and press Enter.
sfc /scannow

Once the scan by SFC is finished, we must exit by typing “exit” and pressing Enter, and we will proceed to restart the PC.
Return to the previous state of the system
Another option we have to solve the problem is to return to the previous state where the problem did not yet exist, something that we can do using the “System Restore” function. This function only affects the system files so it will not be necessary to make any backup of our files since they will not be affected.
To do this we must start the PC in Safe Mode, and the search box of the Start menu, we must write “recovery” and select “Recovery unit” within the results.

Next, we start the Wizard for creating a repair unit. We follow the instructions until we return to the previous restore point. Once finished, we restart the computer again to see if the problem has been solved.
