Apart from the operating system itself, the additional programs we install on our computer play a crucial role in our daily usage. However, sometimes these programs can have a negative impact on the performance of the computer, which in turn can affect the overall functioning of Windows 11.
When we start our computer running Windows, numerous processes and applications automatically launch in the background without our notice. These processes continue to run, often without our awareness. It’s important to understand that these running programs consume system resources, potentially affecting the computer’s overall performance.
While background applications are beneficial as they allow us to work with multiple programs simultaneously, it’s crucial to note that not all applications need to run in the background. This is especially important for resource-intensive applications that consume a significant amount of RAM without active use, potentially slowing down the computer.
Fortunately, there are various ways to address this issue of background applications in Windows 11. In the following discussion, we will explore methods to prevent software from running in the background within the Microsoft system. By doing so, we can avoid sudden drops in performance while working with the programs currently active on our screen.
Remove startup applications in Windows
One of the most effective methods to prevent apps from running in the background on Windows is to remove them from startup. It’s important to note that some programs we install configure themselves to automatically start with Windows, even if we don’t actually need them. This means they consume system resources continuously, often without our awareness. To address this issue, the first step is to access the System Task Manager.
Once the Task Manager window appears on the screen, navigate to the Start section. Here, you’ll find a list of all the programs that launch during PC startup. The advantage is that we have the option to enable or disable these programs based on our specific requirements. Disabling unnecessary programs can significantly save PC resources and improve overall performance.

Change app permissions
Another method to prevent applications from running in the background involves using the Windows 11 Configuration application. To access it, simply press the Win + I key combination. Once inside the Configuration app, navigate to the left-hand side and select the Applications section, then click on Applications and features.
Next, locate the specific app that you want to disable from running in the background. Once you find it, click on the button with three vertical dots next to it and choose Advanced Options.
Within the Advanced Options menu, find the Background application permissions section. Open the dropdown list and select “Never” to disable the app from running in the background. You can repeat this process for any other installed applications as desired.
